Jay Gatsby
Jay Gatsby was part of the exclusive club New Money. This meaning he is a self-made millionaire and has come by his money recently. Gatsby's house proves how rich he really is, it is described as “ a factual imitation of some Hotel do Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden”. Jay Gatsby fought in WWI and went to Oxford after the war. He has a “picture of him playing cricket” at Oxford that was taken while he was attending the school. Jay Gatsby also had an unconditional love for Daisy Buchanan. He had loved her before he went of to the war and asked her to wait for him, however when he got back she had left him because she was tired of waiting and realized that she could "never marry a poor man". This did not stop Jay Gatsby; he devoted his life to earning a massive amount of money quickly, and win Daisy back.
